Does The Colour Of A Teak Bench Change Over Time?
Here at Mr Teak as our name suggests we’re experts in anything related to the crafting and preservation of teak wood for premium garden furniture.
In this article we’re going to be exploring the topic of teak furniture colour, and what is to be expected as it ages.
Teak Wood
Teak is a naturally occurring, robust variety of wood, and it’s due to this property of brawn matched with its elegant and timeless aesthetic that teak furniture is now amongst the most popular in Britain, both indoors and outdoors.
Colour Spectrum
Grade A teak has a naturally light, honey gold tone with striations of wheat and amber warmth.
Grade B teak has more pigment variation and is often darker than grade A teak, whereas grade C teak will have a more uneven colour, being patchy dark with white areas.
All of our Mr Teak furniture is ethically and sustainably sourced from reputable timber harvesting programs, and its quality is deemed ‘Grade A’, meaning all of our designs are realised in premium teak.
Can A Teak Bench Left Outside All Year Round?
Yes, due to the robust nature of teak as a malleable material, a teak bench can most definitely be left outside in all seasons.
Natural Teak Colour Change
Teak does, over time, naturally transition from a light, wheat golden colour to a silvery grey tone, known as ‘weathering’, whilst maintaining its rustic charm and structural integrity.
Long exposure to the ever changing British weather conditions including rain and the Sun’s UV rays, is the cause for this change in colour, as the elements drench a teak bench in a silvery hue.
Teak Treatment
The transition in colour is nothing to worry about, however if you would like to extenuate your garden furniture’s golden tones (and also prevent cracking), you can apply teak treatment oils.
Teak oils and sealants can keep your garden furniture looking new, and structurally sound, but must only be applied once the teak has ‘weathered’, as all of our teak has been pre-treated and premature use of oil or sealant may damage the furniture.
Please also note that the application of sealants or oils will invalidate your rights to return your product, please see our terms and conditions.
Bench Covers
The most effective way of protecting teak furniture that's kept outside all year, is to use a high quality, easy to store and apply, material cover to encapsulate your bench when it’s not in use.
This practice will prevent discolouration, as well as moisture and sudden temperature changes from warping and cracking the surface of your furniture.
Our ‘Weather guard’ covers are made from long lasting PVC backed woven polyester, and offer a durable barrier of all season protection for your teak furniture and can provide an effective layer of resistance from the harshest of British weather conditions.
